Delegate Garrett Named to Commission on Retirement System Reform

Lynchburg, VA: Speaker of the House of Delegates William Howell appointed Delegate T. Scott Garrett, M.D. to the newly-formed “Commission on Employee Retirement Security and Pension Reform.” This commission was created by House Bill 665 during the 2016 General Assembly Session and signed by the Governor in April. The commission will begin its work in July 2016.
Delegate Garrett is one of eleven legislative members of the commission. They are directed by law to study, report, and make recommendations on (1) the financial soundness of all defined benefit retirement plans administered by the Virginia Retirement System (VRS), (2) the attributes of retirement plans for current and future state and local employees, (3) the impact of and strategies for addressing anticipated retirements in the next 10 years, and (4) elements of compensation and benefit packages necessary to attract and retain highly productive state and local government workforce.

“I am honored and humbled that Speaker Howell placed his confidence in my service on this important commission. It is imperative that the Commonwealth keep the commitments we made to our dedicated public servants and put a system in place that ensures a quality state and local workforce in the future. I look forward to working with my colleagues on this commission to affirm these commitments. It really is all about trust,” said Delegate Garrett.
“Throughout his service in the General Assembly, Delegate Garrett has been instrumental in crafting our fiscally-responsible approach to state spending. He is a forward-thinking leader that will make a great asset on the newly formed Retirement Security Commission. I look forward to working with Delegate Garrett as we secure the future of the Commonwealth,” said Speaker William J. Howell.

Delegate T. Scott Garrett, M.D. represents the 23rd District in the Virginia General Assembly, which includes portions of Amherst County, Bedford County, and the City of Lynchburg.
