Richmond, VA – The Speaker of the House of Delegates has appointed Delegate T. Scott Garrett, M.D. to three standing committees. Delegate Garrett will continue to serve on the House Appropriations Committee, Transportation Committee, and Health, Welfare, & Institutions Committee, where he has additionally been appointed as Vice-Chairman. There are 14 standing committees in the House of Delegates for the 2018 General Assembly Session.
Delegate Garrett will also serve on seven Subcommittees; including Chairman of the Health and Human Resources Subcommittee of Appropriations. This Subcommittee will craft the health care portion of the state biennial budget. He has also been tasked with serving as Chairman of a Transportation Subcommittee that deals with safety and highway issues and a Health, Welfare, & Institutions Subcommittee that deals with health issues.
Some of the Transportation Committee’s most pressing topics this year include tolling, traffic congestion in Northern Virginia, and funding of statewide projects through “Smart Scale.” Some of the Health, Welfare, and Institutions Committee’s most pressing topics this year include the opioid epidemic, mental health care, Medicaid services, and the scope of practice for some of our health care professionals. On the Appropriations Committee, our constitutional requirement for Virginia is to have a balanced budget. As such, each member of this committee is responsible for understanding the needs of programs and interests across our great Commonwealth, and then crafting a conservative, responsible, and structurally balanced budget, which funds our public education, health care, infrastructure, and safety.
“It is an honor to serve in the Virginia House of Delegates. I thank our new Speaker, Delegate Kirk Cox, for entrusting me with committee assignments that will make a difference in the lives of so many people across the Commonwealth. I am also grateful to him for placing me in a leadership role on the Health, Welfare, & Institutions Committee, as well as to Appropriations Committee Chairman Chris Jones for placing me in a leadership role on the Health and Human Resources Subcommittee of Appropriations. As a health care professional, I’m looking forward to applying my background to the policy and funding needs for these vital health care programs and services that impact the lives of countless Virginians,” said Delegate Garrett.
“Delegate Garrett has grown to be a strong leader in the House of Delegates. His experience and ability to work with members on both sides of the aisle makes him a vital member to these three important committees. This year I look forward to working with him to pass practical solutions to everyday issues,” said Speaker Kirk Cox.
Delegate T. Scott Garrett, M.D. represents the 23rd District in the Virginia House of Delegates, which includes portions of Amherst County, Bedford County, and the City of Lynchburg.
