This marks the end of the first full week of the 2016 General Assembly Legislative Session. And we have begun to take action on the over 2,000 bills filed for consideration.
In this edition of the Garrett Gazette, you will find information about the opening day of the 2016 Session, an opportunity to visit with me in the District, and meet some of our neighbors who visited Richmond this week.
If you’d like to contact me directly, feel free to email DelSGarrett@house.virginia.gov. As always, I am grateful for your confidence and look forward to participating in a process that produces good public policy that benefits our district and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
All The Best,
Delegate Scott Garrett M.D.
Opening Day of the 2016 General Assembly
On Wednesday at noon, the Speaker gaveled the House to order. At that time, all new and returning members were sworn in. The House of Delegates is pleased to welcome 11 new members to our body and look forward to working with them in the coming days. After a unanimous re-election, Speaker Bill Howell (R- Stafford) outlined the House Republican agenda for the year, including strengthening Virginia's economy, investing in new educational opportunities, and being responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. Hear full remarks are available here: https://youtu.be/4E3LmQA19Y1.
That evening, Governor McAuliffe delivered the annual State of the Commonwealth address to the Joint Assembly of the House of Delegates and the Senate. Unfortunately, the Governor continues to push for Obamacare's Medicaid expansion and more gun control.
The Speaker appointed me to serve on the Appropriations, Transportation, and Health, Welfare & Institutions Committees in the House. On the House Appropriations Committee, I will serve on three sub-committees: Health & Human Resources, Compensation & Retirement, and Transportation. This is the first year I will serve on both the policy and the fiscal committees for both Transportation and Health Care. These are two key issues that are important to the people of Central Virginia and I look forward to diving into the details of the proposals before us this Session.
On Saturday, February 20 at 8am, I am holding a "Mid-Session Update" for members of our community to hear the status of public policy and the budget. We will have passed the half-way mark of Session at that time and I will be able to provide you with an outlook at the second half of the Session. Breakfast is optional, for $10.
