The Garrett Gazette July 2015

Dear Friends,

It's hard to believe it's already mid-July. I've been busy this summer with activities across the 23rd House District. My family and I have also been able to spend some quality time together.

Here are just a few of the events I've been involved with:

  • Region 2000 Broadband Summit
  • Lynchburg Cub Scouts Summer Camp (speaker)
  • Investiture of 5 new central Virginia judges
  • Lynchburg Regional Transportation Advocacy Group meeting ("LR-TAG")
  • United Way of Central Virginia's "Community Engagement Luncheon"
  • Region 2000 Local Government Council (member)
  • Ribbon cutting for Liberty Mountain Medical Group
  • Meeting between CVTC Families and Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services Director Ferguson

If you would like for me to attend your local event, please contact Sarah in my office at (434) 455-0243 or by email at

As always, I am grateful for your confidence and look forward to participating in a process that produces good public policy that benefits our district and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

All The Best,

Delegate Scott Garrett M.D.

2015 Sales Tax Holiday: Hurricane,

School, and Energy Star Products

Legislation enacted by the 2015 General Assembly combines Virginia’s three existing sales tax holidays into one three-day holiday beginning the first Friday in August at 12:01 a.m. and ending the following Sunday at 11:59 p.m. This year’s sales tax holiday is August 7-9.

That means that during the sales tax holiday period, consumers can purchase qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products without paying sales tax. This includes qualifying items purchased online, by mail or over the phone.

In addition to the specific items exempted, retailers may also choose to offer other items “tax-free” by paying the sales tax themselves during the holiday.

Back to School Supplies Drive

On Saturday, August 8th, Delegate Garrett is partnering with Wal-Mart stores and local volunteers to hold his annual "Back to School Supplies Drive."

If you have TWO HOURS of your time to donate on August 8th, we would love to have you participate in this rewarding experience. We have a need for volunteers at the Madison Heights, Wards Road, and Old Forest Road Wal-Mart stores.

Volunteers greet customers at each Wal-Mart entrance, providing them with a small flyer "wish list," asking them to pick up a few items to donate to local students and teachers in need. As the customers leave the store, volunteers accept the donated supplies and organize them in plastic bins.

All donations go directly to Amherst County, Bedford County, and Lynchburg City schools. Previous events have raised thousands of dollars in donated school supplies.

To volunteer your time, please contact Sarah Owen by emailing
